Booked for my dad's sixtieth and they moved us to the corner table without being asked. The hogget was the best thing I have eaten this year, and nobody rushed us out at half nine.
Fen and Field is a thirty-four cover dining room five minutes from the Downs. The kitchen is open to the room, the menu is rewritten most Mondays, and Sunday lunch runs until the beef has gone.
Walk-ins welcome at the six seats along the pass. For anything else, ring 0117 496 0148.
Kitchen open tonight from 6pm, last tables at 9.15pm.
Wye Valley asparagus has landed. Two tables left for Sunday at 1pm.
On the menu this week
Four of the dishes running at the moment. The full carte changes as the boxes arrive from Chew Valley, so treat this as a strong hint rather than a promise.
Set lunch
Two courses £24, three for £29, Tuesday to Saturday until 2.30. A glass of picpoul with it is £8.50.
How we work
Vegetables and leaves come from Ashcombe Farm in the Chew Valley on Tuesday and Friday mornings. What turns up decides half the menu.
There is no pass hatch to hide behind. Six seats face the stoves, which keeps everyone honest and makes the room smell right.
We take beef by the forequarter and fish by the box, so the menu carries the cuts that need eating rather than only the easy ones.
Sundays
One sitting rolls into the next from midday. Beef sirloin from Hale Court Farm, dry-aged forty-five days, carved to order and sent out pink unless you tell us otherwise. Everything comes with duck fat potatoes, a Yorkshire the size of a fist, greens, roasted roots and a proper gravy.
